Weak Little Chicken

This weekend was crazy. I had two baby showers. One of which was my sister's so much of my weekends this month have been spent at my mother's house. I did get up at 4:30 on Saturday and did an hour on the bike.

I had a.m. Cardio today. 40 minutes on the recumbent bike.

Today was my first heavy day for chest and tris.
Wow was I pathetic with my 10lb plate on each side of the hammerstrength machine.
I haven't hit chest on a regular basis is probably to years. Yes I'll randomly hit the cable crossovers and push ups but I haven't gone heavy.

I warmed up as normal and hit the hammerstrength. 3x12 with yes a 10lb plate on each side.
Overhead presses for tris with 22.5lb db.
Cable crossovers for chest. I did those rotating to flyes with every other set. 3x12 on first set then super sets the other two.
Single arm tricep pressdown 3x12
Face pulls with rope. 65lbs. I usually do these for back and shoulders but I felt the need to stretch my chest.

Off to abs. I am in love with Russian twists. 2 sets of 50 per side.
Leg raises 3 sets of 29.
Weighted side bends to floor crunches.

Back to work. I am in trouble. My chest is already tender. Yikes.

Did legs with the bands while the oven pre heated.
Donkey kicks, abductors then lunges off the stairs.

I have made good progress and can see the definition faintly coming through.

Legs are Toast

Leg day in the gym.

I love training legs. There is always a balance when training legs of going heavy but not too heavy.
Isn't it funny that there is always that one machine you look forward to tackling and there it is, that stupid sign from management, "out of order", "parts on order", " sorry for the inconvenience"! Agh!!!!!

So no leg extensions.

Leg press 3x12
Leg curls- although I'm not very comfortable having my tush in the air, this machine is awesome.

Off to circuit style training.
Plie squats to stiff legged deadlifts to reverse cross lunges.
Three times.

Abs.
Russian twists are my new friend. Love love love.
Side bends, twists, leg raises.
15 minutes cardio.
.......

It's Friday morning and I'm on the bike. I bumped the alarm to 4:30 a.m.
I truly enjoy my morning cardio. Well, ok not the cardio but being on a recumbent bike watching whatever I WANT with an Ipad in hand blogging away. Oh and I sweat and sweat alot. I have such a hard time sweating so to be up before the sun, breaking a sweat gives me this feeling of having a headstart to the day.

Go Heavy or Go Home?

40 minutes on recumbent bike.
Off to work for a crazy day. One word- auditors.
Hit the gym for a heavy back workout.
I haven't gone heavy in the gym focusing on one body part in years. Let me just say by the second rep of the third set I was toast. I had to push myself on the rest of the exercises. I am so thankful I had rice and chicken before hand.

Reverse grip pulldowns 3 sets of 10.
One arm rows.
Hypers.
Stiff legged deadlifts.

Did a tiny bit of tris to confirm that yes they are sore.

I'm beat.

Reality has hit and it won't discourage me.

Tuesday was a busy day. Daniel had cardio so I got an extra 15 minutes of sleep! Yes.
Off to work. Gym time came fast.

Although I hit bis and tris the night prior with the bands the need to hit them with weights kept running through my mind.
I planned my 30 minutes carefully. I found a a workout for abs on Pinterest that I thought would be challenging. Boy was I right.
For many years I took and taught Muay Thai along side my husband. His training techniques were at least an entire decade ahead of others. His students were RIPPED as was I.

My core strength is puny these days in comparison. I gave the workout my all and that was about 80%. I became discouraged with each set of plank exercises but pushed through them regardless of my embarrassing form. I kept thinking that this is my first time doing these and I'll have this mastered in no time. I'm really trying to use the power of positive thinking. :)

Hit bis and tris. This was my second dose of reality. Although my strength is the same, the mass is not. I have maintained a good weight over the years but have come to the realization that muscle has been replaced with fat. Now I'm not beating myself up as i know my life and priorities have changed. Oh and I am a few years older. ;) Matters not. I can do anything I put my mind too. Boy if I had a million dollars the things I could really do and change in the life of others. But I don't, so I do my best and try to use my God given talents to help others. I'm cool with that.

So as I left the gym I was a bit bummed and texted my husband as he is my best friend and my coach. He supports me in such an amazing way. He is selfless when it comes to my needs. I am thankful for that.

I immediately, even before making it to my car, started formulating a plan. I knew what I need to do.

Dhane had juijitsu last night so we walked through the door around 7:00. I put on my runners and hit the door. It was an amazing night for a run. The stars were bright and the air crisp. I did my normal tenth of a mile walk and took off. My breathing regulated pretty darn fast. I checked my pace and was cruising. I hit mile one fast. I ran towards Dhane's school. Our neighborhood is so hilly and I wanted just a good flat course where I could work on speed and maintaining that threshold. I pushed myself to keep a faster pace. It wasn't hard physically but it was the mental pushing. Believing that I could maintain that pace and not to allow myself to slow.

I hit three miles in 24:24. Yes al close to a sub 8 minute mile. I recovered quite fast and decided to run home. Running home really means lunging up hills. I reminded myself that the hills are my friend in 5k races. That was the longest .87 miles EVER.

I came home to my husband smiling and my little one already bathed and ready to hang with me.

I sat down with Daniel last night and we discussed my plan on what I need to do to get my mass back while cutting this fat. Easy enough.

1.22.2012-1.23.2012

Sunday morning I woke up quite early and jumped on the bike. This is when I typed up the blog below on the race. I always enjoy watching documentaries when I'm on the bike. I get pulled into the beauty and culture not realizing I'm putting mile after mile in on the bike.

Sunday- 26 miles on the bike- a good slow recovery for my race the day prior.

Monday- We had tornado warnings from midnight to 2a.m. so there was no way I was going to push myself to get up at 4:45a.m. and do cardio. I must have not been the only one to spend a few hours awake in the middle of the night. My coworkers were walking around like Zombies.

Again this proves just how vital it is to get our rest. I try for 7-8 hours a night. Anything less and I have to push myself through the next day and that's just a plain crappy way to live.

Hit the gym for pure cardio on my lunch break- 30 minutes on the elliptical.-

Last night was my first night using Bodylastics.
I picked Dhane up from school and we were home by 5:30p.m. I put him on the counter to have a snack and chat with me while I made coffee for the next day and then we headed upstairs for a quick bath.

He was ready to relax for the rest of the evening and made his way downstairs to draw while I changed into my workout clothes.

I had 20 minutes while the oven pre-heated for dinner and the hubby walking through the door.

I set the Bodylastics system up in the corner of the family room on a door and got to work.

Circuit 1- back rows, over head extension, chest press
Circuit 2- I stood with one foot on the band and did ---- overhead extensions, bicep curls, shoulder press and side lat raises- whew the burn!!!
Circuit 3- had a band on the bottom of the door and put on an ankle strap- donkey kicks, leg abductors. Picked up my 20lb db and did plie squats on my yoga mat. Finished with reverse cross over lunges.

Laid on the rug in front of the couch and did basic crunches and leg raises by holding on to the bottom of the couch.

The oven started beeping and Daniel walked in the door! Success!

I was pleased with the workout and did break a sweat. My intentions for Bodylastics is to supplement my weight training. I think bands are great but there is NOTHING like pushing weight around.

First race of the year. Nashville Zoo Run.1.21.12

I signed up for the Zoo Run the last week of December. I thought I would have plenty of time to train. 4 runs later I find myself getting dressed and heading to the run. I didn't have expectations as there were no realistic grounds to have one. I had only ran maybe 7 times in the last two months. In the back of my head I knew I would do pretty good. I do better with little training. It seems the only thing that changes with more runs are more injuries.

I was so very nervous on my drive to the zoo. I haven't been around the energy of fellow runners in months. The turn lane to get in the Zoo intensified my anxiety. Ten minutes later I rounded the corner and saw the finish line banner and crowds of people. In that moment my nerves were at ease and a smile emerged. There is something very welcoming about that Nashville Strider Start/Finish banner. I've run under that banner dozens of times all over middle Tennessee. I was ready.

The crowd at the zoo run is one that always gives me mixed emotions. Its where the elite mix with the families, groups of girlfriends and walkers. Because of my pace I'm slightly behind the elite. The air is different in this pack. The energy is selfish and quite. I hate waiting in this pack for the gun to go off. Minutes before the gun goes off I try to find someone to have a short chat with. This brings me back to a sense of unity on why we are all there- to run.

It was cold. It was cloudy. Typical for a January run in Tennessee. I love running in the cold. It forces my breathing to be shallow therefore less strenuous. The pack started to thicken. We were all moving, stretching, jumping-anything to stay warm. The air gets warmer with all the energy. This always calms me. The gun goes off- here we go.

I stopped running with music last year. I always have it when I train but never at a race. The Zoo run is my favorite race to run out of all runs without music. I will try to explain. We start with pavement. People are still talking and laughing. About a half mile in its silence. We are on raw earth. The pounding of feet is muffled. We round the corner and are on wet gravel. The sound is higher pitched as the rocks scratch together. We run on more pavement and at this point I'm in my pace pack. This is where people are no longer passing me. We are all running together. My favorite is when we run over wooden bridges. I love that sound. Its loud and echos. Its my favorite.

Then there it is- the biggest incline of the race. A steady uphill battle. This is my favorite part. You see I'm not built like a "runner" that typically runs at my pace. I'm shorter and have alot more muscle in my legs. This is why I love the inclines. I shorten my breath and lunge with speed up the hills. I pass skinny runners as they are pushing themselves and struggling to maintain a good heart rate. This is my high. I lunge up the hill and at the top-I'm gone. I recover fast thanks to my trusty short muscular legs and hit my pace again.

Running through the zoo itself is fun. The terrain changes every few hundred feet. Only a half mile left. I look at my GPS, the pack ahead of me and take a deep breath. I raise my arms over my head to fill my lungs with new air and my inner trigger goes off. I want to always be able to finish a race strong. I want to fly past the finish line. I take off and dropped my pace by a minute. I know I can maintain a much faster pace for a few minutes. Its all mind over body. With each person I pass I'm screaming "Go Naomi! " in my head. I round the corner and see the finish line. I check the clock time and sprint. I'm done.

Immediately I start the battle in my head of what I could have done better. I have flashbacks to were I slowed and didn't push myself. Good Lord it's not that complicated. It's just a 5k. But its not for me. I run through the gambit of emotions.

I placed 9th in my class and 72 out of over 500 females. My run was slower than last year but still pretty darn good for a girl with a bruised tailbone, tight lungs from being exposed to cats two hours before the race and only 4 runs. Oh and a dose of benadryl. Lol!

I can't wait for the next race so I can go through this all over again.

1.20.2012 Friday!

Yesterday was tough. I was beat from my training on Wednesday. I mean I could barely move and spent most of my day in my chair at work. I did not train at all. I made it to PF Changs for soup and that was it.

Today is better. I got up and did my normal morning cardio routine before waking the boys. I will not train today as I have a race tomorrow and I need my body strong and recovered.

Tomorrow is my first race of 2012. It snuck up on me a week early so I am a bit nervous but excited to be back out there with the runners. It's at the Zoo in Nashville and it is one of my favorite races.

Glimmer Glimmer

1.18.2012- a jammed packed day.

Up at 4:45a.m. for my morning cardio. 11.5 miles.

Off to work.

I hit the gym close to 3p.m.
Triceps- over head presses and cable pressdowns.
Chest- cable flyes and crossovers.
I decided to do just a few legs exercises to keep my muscles loose.
Hit the treadmill for 15 minutes.

Got home and knew I had to run since my race is THIS Saturday and not next. UGH! What a dummy.

Ran 3 miles in 25:58. Not bad considering the pain in my tailbone was breath taking.
I fell two weeks ago and well I guess I fractured it. I put a nice bag of ice in my workout pants and took ibuprofen.

I am here on the couch typing this and thinking you know I am starting to feel like my old self, like Thai.

:)

1.17.2012

Ah so no training over the weekend. Jammed packed with home projects, the usual cleaning, shopping and helping my mother with the preparations for my sister's baby shower at the end of the month. Although I did not "train", I was beat.

Monday-
4:45a.m.- 11.5 miles on the bike- 45 minutes.
1:00p.m. lunch break training. Hit back, bis and a bit of abs.

Weight is holding steady. I'm trying to not get discouraged. Just keep moving forward. There is still many changes that need to be made to my food intake. I'm doing it very slowly so I will stick with it.

Tonight is family night at Dhane's Jiujitsu school. I'm a bit excited and hope to break a sweat.

I'm averaging 7 hours of sleep and an easy 120 ounces of water a day.

No a.m. cardio today. Just running around packing meals for my and my little one.

Will hit the gym today. It's pure cardio and abs. I found my insanity dvd but it will not play on our fancy new blueray player. I have an old dvd player that I hope is upstairs and will give it another shot in the tomorrow.

I have a race next weekend and haven't ran in a week. Yikes. I would have never thought January would be so busy.

Rest and Recover

Thursday was a day of rest for me. I tend to push myself, wear down, get sick, and not be able to train. This is a cycle that I have decided to prevent since I had a 12 week fight with strep throat the last few months of 2011. So Thursday was a rest day.

No a.m. cardio, no gym.

The scale is moving in the right direction.

Friday Morning-
4:45a.m.- 40 minutes on the recumbent bike.

Gym at lunch.

I have a race in two weeks so I will be putting miles in this weekend on the pavement.

Wednesday, January 11, 2012

1.11.2012

4:45 a.m.- 11 miles on the bike.
1:00p.m.- Hit the gym. Legs and a bit of bis.

I focused on my legs the majority of my time. My tailbone is bruised so I am still limited on what seated exercises I can do.
Went heavy on my bis meaning 22.5lb db curls. Lol,

A few pounds have shed and I'm doing well with my eats.

I'm tired.

1.10.2012

Posting from my Iphone while on the bike. Fancy Schmancy.

Tuesdays have always been my least favorite day but now that Dhane has JuiJitsu on Tuesdays that has changed. He is stronger, faster, and more confident. I love that he enjoys training.

Not near as sore today after my skating incident.
12:pm- Hit the gym. I love to stretch and always do that first. My fav is hanging from this weird cage thats at the gym. My back sounds like bubble wrap being walked on and then that good pain that comes by hanging just a little longer. I swear I grow an inch with this stretch.
Did a bit of abs, shoulders and back.
My time so limited that it is hard to focus and feel that Im really working a muscle group.
I need more time. I've discussed going at night after Dhane's class on Tuesday and Thursdays with D. and of course he is nothing but support.

Tonight I chose the bike instead of heading out. Mile 8......

Monday, January 9, 2012

1.9.2012

4:45 a.m. - 30 minutes on the recumbent bike. 10 miles.
1:30 p.m.- 30 minute work out on my lunch break. A bit of legs and abs.

Today was quite pathetic in the gym. We took our son roller skating Saturday. Long story short; He fell, my wheel wrapped around his pants and I went airborne like a cartoon character.
I am sore all over. My right arm and my lower back/tailbone is bruised. Needless to say this had a negative impact on my training today.

Today's eats were great. I am in the process of breaking myself from snacking. I believe this is a natural result from having kids. You eat while you can. You eat to survive. Matters not that it's 3 goldfish in the bottom of my purse.

*Note to self- must buy new scale as the one we currently have is positively out of calibration.* I'm about 6.5lbs heavier than I was a few weeks ago. Damn scale!

So here we are-Run...Train...Repeat

For years I kept fitness journals that tracked my progress, my failures and accomplished goals.
I had a wonderful group of ladies that gave me support and cheered me on my journey. Little did I know how much value my journals had in relation to my self-accountability. The site has closed and most of us have gone our separate ways. Truth is, I need those girls in my life to keep me going when I'm tired and discouraged. I need them by my side to celebrate my victories as little as they may seem.

I need a "journal" so my words and works are recorded. There is something about putting my life into words that makes it stick just a little bit longer.

So here we are- Run...Train... Repeat.

Life has changed in many many wonderful ways these last 7 years. We now have a child who will be 7 years old this July. He is the light that shines in our eyes. We have moved into the beautiful town of Nolensville in Tennessee. This past summer we bought our second home. I've been working for the last 2 years in the corporate world. Things have changed. Priorities have shifted.

The days of being in the gym 7 days a week and having zero carbs in the house with the exception to rice and sweet potatos are long gone. Through this shift of priorities I have found a new love and it's the love of running. I ran my first race in September of 2009 have ran at least 20 more since. It is a freedom I need to survive this new lifestyle.
*Goal inserted here*- Run my first half in 2012*

I am fortunate to squeeze in a 30 minute weight session at the gym on my lunch break.
I ride a recumbent bike every other morning for 30-45 minutes just to get myself going.
I run when I can.

Routine is key. Children thrive under routine. I don't think that need ever leaves us.
I'm not one for the quote "Resolution" at the beginning of the year however this year is different.
My mind fills with bullet points of wanted accomplishments. The rush of life pushes them back quite fast but they keep on bouncing back.

I must recognize them.

Moving was a big step for us. We spent 10 years in our starter home so there was always a feeling of things being temporary. I don't have that feeling anymore. I swear I feel a sense of freedom now that we've moved. It's wonderful. I love our home and Nolensville.

I guess here is the place to start. To write down the official - 2012 Goals

  • Run a Half Marathon

  • Race at least once a month

  • Break 200 miles on my Nike+GPS (current is 134.7)

  • Lean out

  • Gain Strength

I want to keep this as Fitness and Race related as possible. I will link to my personal blog as it is impossible to share my daily life without inserts of my husband and son along the way.
